Funny we had this conversation. Honda stopped selling the CR-V in Japan in August, because the Vezel was vastly outselling it and apparently stole a lot of its potential buyers.

I don't think cars in this segment are all that popular in Japan. Ever since the subcompact crossovers started (CX-3, Vezel, Juke, RVR, New Escudo, XV), these cars have lost a lot of sales in Japan, where big interior size in a small exterior size is extremely important because of how taxes work.

It is true. One of Top Gear magazine reporters was in Japan few years ago, and in his article he mentioned that on week spend in Japan he saw 3 SUVs in total.

Am I the only one who finds it strange that Honda hasn't updated it's top selling CUV in it's home country, while it's facelifted version is available in pretty much every other market it's sold in?

I mean, it's one of only a handful of JDM Hondas that DON'T wear the brand's new corporate front fascia styling in some way, shape, or form, with the others being the CR-Z (which was updated last year), the Legend (not as easy to do, being a rebadged Acura), and the Vamos and Vamos Hobio (both being designs older than the CR-V).

Quick look at competitors: Nissan X-Trail (since 2013, recently got a hybrid model), Mazda CX-5 (since 2012, facelift in 2015), Mitsubishi Outlander (since 2012, major facelift in 2015, has a hybrid), Suzuki Escudo 2.4 (since 2006, last updated in 2012), Subaru Forester (since 2012, facelift in 2015), Toyota RAV4 (since 2005, facelift in 2008), Toyota Harrier (since 2013, has a hybrid)

So I think that the Vezel is heavily outselling the CR-V on its home market, and that the CR-V is now destined to be another RAV4, which is not being updated at all.
