Budd Company has produced car bodies for various brands, such as Morris, Nash and Pontiac, as well as components for other major brands.

In 1961 they created a concept car by combining a Ford Thunderbird body with a Ford Falcon chassis, and pitched it to Ford. They were turned down, and a few years later Ford introduced the Mustang to the market.
After being declined, Budd created the XR-400 by combining a sports car body with the Rambler Ambassador chassis, and pitched it to AMC. They were again turned down, and dropped the idea.

An interesting "what if" in automotive history, if AMC had accepted the XR-400 and made it into a production car, they could have had a Ford Mustang competitor before Ford introduced their pony car.
