Hehe, funny. USA taking so big care about environment by making car import harder, but they didn't sign a Kioto pact.

Oh, it's not just environmental/emissions. It's also safety, as well. Anyone else remember the Motorex/Nissan Skyline incident?

Actually, it's not industry based, but emissions based. The US restriction is the same way, with the 25 year old exception intended for just collectable cars, but I'm sure regular everyday cars could be included too. (which is why I'd like to import any pre '86 Ford Falcon utility (pickup))

Why? Is it the way to protect national car industry or what? I really don't understand a reason for this limit. :/

For those who don't know, it's an emission standard. 1-5. 1 was issued in '92, 2 in '96, 3 in 2000, 4 in 2005 and 5 in 2008.

Did I get it right?

There are used cars import restrictions in US?

Yeah. If a car is not originally sold in the US (with the exception of a few Canadian and Mexican models (ex. Chevrolet Astra, which I saw on the road once with New York plates)) it can only be imported if it was involved in some sort of technological advancement, or has historic value, and even then, it can only be driven less than 2,500 miles per year.

The NHTSA made an exception in 1998, which allowed cars of 25 or more years vintage in, regardless. As of now, it must be 1986 or older (because it's 2011).

The 5 Turbo was only made from '80 to '84, meaning any model of it is legal, but it might be costly, though.

Sweet! And, since it's more than 25 years old, it can be legally imported to the US! Yay!
